About

VJ Mouseonthetelly (Mandi Peers) is a London-based video artist.  The main areas she works in are either making music videos or playing live visuals at music events. In addition to this, she loves to experiment with the medium of video as an art form to express particular ideas. She can provide a good setup as a VJ when needed.  She has her own VJ rig consisting of laptop, 3 x video mixers, DVD player, 4 projectors: 2 HD medium throw and 2 short throw projectors. Also, 2 screens, 2 tables, a barrier, and drapes.

Mouseonthetelly works with both Resolume and Madmapper. Sometimes her visuals are output solely from Resolume, other times she uses Madmapper in combination with Resolume to do video mapping

Mouseonthetelly is quite an unusual VJ because she is a wheelchair user. She is therefore very keen to do more work within the disability arts sector. Where appropriate, she always likes to include positive and beautiful images of disabled people as part of her video content.

Live visuals

Since 2008 she has been playing live visuals at music events. To give an idea about how Mouseonthetelly works when playing live visuals, it is worth giving a few examples here from some of her shows.

She started out in London’s nightclub scene with a regular monthly residency at Planet Angel, which lasted for 2 years. At this event, she often projected her live visuals onto a giant balloon using 2 projectors.

She also played live for several years at Incloodu, a Deaf arts and culture festival held at Rich Mix, London. For this event, she used her entire video set up. For larger events like this, she is assisted by 2 other VJ’s (Quiller and Elli Ven from The Big Everything). As well as playing live visuals for the DJ sets, Mouseonthetelly and TBE also assisted all the other performers with any A/V needs for their shows.

Another event where her entire rig is used, along with support by other VJ’s, is at the London Remixed Festival.  For this event, she has live visuals playing either side of the stage in the Polka Club, along with a DVD of her own selection of Polka images which is played centre-stage when the DJs are playing between the sets of the bands.  She has been having a great time playing live visuals at LRF since 2011.

An additional example of her work was at Night of the Senses, a very large-scale event celebrating eroticism, held at Electrowerkz.  For Mouseonthetelly, that event involved her visuals playing in 2 rooms.  Separating these two spaces were several large windows. She covered them with white screens and, using her 2 short-throw projectors, played live visuals, which could then be seen in both of these rooms.  Her other two projectors were used to play the same content inside the room where the DJ was playing.  Then another projector in the main hall played a loop of vintage erotica which she created.

One other notable event was her half-hour set for VJ London.  This was a monthly VJ meet-up and was a great space for artists to meet each other and show their work. For this event, she collaborated with percussionist (and DJ) Jon Bongly to create a totally stripped-down show where her visuals were directly synched to and driven by Jon’s drumming, so the only 2 elements of the performance were her visuals with the drumming.   She likes minimalism!

Other events where her live visuals were played include Temporary Autonomous Arts events, Liberty Festival of Disability Arts, Acme Sound System, Technoises, and Naked. More recently, she has been enjoying playing with her live visuals, using Resolume and Madmapper, at electronic music jamming sessions organised by Plugged and Crux AV.

She is open to work all around the world, at clubs, festivals and raves.

Music videos

During the COVID lockdown, Mouseonthetelly has been busy making music videos and taking part with her visuals in online music events, notably for Plugged, where she has created videos to go with music by various producers taking part in each event. She has also created a promotional video for the track ‘Barabus’ by acid techno producer and DJ, Rowland the Bastard, as well as creating her longest ever music video – over 90 minutes of visuals to go with an entire RTB mix!

Video as an art medium

In recent times, Mouseonthetelly has become involved with an East London-based artists collective called Art House Project.  Her most recent work with them was a video celebrating the spray can as an artform for an online exhibition featuring many international artists, called ‘Shake It’ So far, she has made 3 videos which have been a part of AHP online exhibitions. For those video’s, she chose all the music herself.

Content creation

Mouseonthetelly has always created her own unique movie clips for all her live shows and promotional videos. Often her work features dancers, which she films herself.  She also makes clips from all sorts of random objects.  Her work is often very quirky, colourful and cheerful (although her visuals can be quite dark and twisted when the occasion demands!)

In the not-too-distant future some of these clips will be available for sale, so watch this space!
